New Cast Members Revealed for The Rose of Versailles Anime Film

The staff behind the upcoming anime film adaptation of Riyoko Ikeda’s The Rose of Versailles manga has revealed three new cast members for the highly anticipated movie, slated for release on January 31, 2025.

The Rose of Versailles is directed by Ai Yoshimura (known for Daily Lives of High School Boys and My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU) at the renowned MAPPA studio. The script is written by Tomoko Konparu (Ashita no Nadja, Uta no Prince-sama – Maji Love 1000%), with Mariko Oka (First Love Monster, Hell Girl) serving as the character designer. Music will be produced by Hiroyuki Sawano (Attack on Titan, Blue Exorcist) and Kohta Yamamoto (Kaina of the Great Snow Sea, 86).

Set in the late 18th century during the reign of Marie Antoinette, the film tells the story of Oscar François de Jarjayes, a woman raised as a man to serve in the French palace guards. Oscar’s world intertwines with figures like the Austrian-born Marie Antoinette, her servant and childhood friend André Grandier, and the Swedish noble Hans Axel von Fersen. Together, they navigate their destinies amid the political intrigue and turmoil of the French Revolution.

Originally serialized from 1972 to 1973, The Rose of Versailles is one of the most influential shoujo manga series of all time, drawing acclaim for its compelling portrayal of love, destiny, and revolutionary change. The manga has inspired various adaptations, including a 40-episode anime series in 1979-1980 and multiple stage productions, notably by the all-female Takarazuka Revue.

In the U.S., The Rose of Versailles manga is published by Udon Entertainment, who began releasing the series in omnibus volumes in 2019. The manga also inspired the Shiritsu BeruBara Academy game in 2019, adding to its extensive legacy.

With the film’s release just around the corner, fans are eagerly awaiting to experience this new adaptation of an iconic story that has shaped anime and manga history.
