Vatican Unveils ‘Luce,’ Anime Mascot Aimed at Youth Engagement

by Hazel

The Vatican has introduced a new cartoon mascot named “Luce,” an anime-inspired girl designed to resonate with younger audiences. The character, adorned in a raincoat, has already generated a mix of enthusiasm and criticism online.

Luce was created in anticipation of the Catholic Church’s upcoming 2025 Jubilee Year, a celebration centered on themes of hope, forgiveness, and pilgrimage. The name “Luce,” which translates to “light” in Italian, reflects the Church’s effort to connect with today’s youth, who are familiar with popular anime such as One Piece and Demon Slayer. The character is depicted in the “chibi” art style, characterized by short figures with oversized heads and limbs.

Designed by Italian pop artist Simone Legno, known for his tokidoki brand, Luce draws inspiration from both street art and Japanese culture. Archbishop Rino Fisichella, who is overseeing the Jubilee Year, noted that the mascot aims to engage with pop culture, which resonates strongly with younger generations.

Luce is depicted as a pilgrim, complete with a raincoat, muddy boots, and a walking staff, symbolizing resilience in challenging times. Her attire features significant Catholic symbolism, including rosary beads and bright blue hair that may reference the Virgin Mary. The character’s eyes are adorned with scallop shells, a traditional emblem of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage.

The introduction of Luce has sparked an enthusiastic response among anime-loving Catholics, leading to an outpouring of fan art and positive commentary. Some observers have drawn parallels between Luce and iconic anime characters like Rei from Neon Genesis Evangelion, while others have humorously compared her appearance to that of the Morton Salt Girl.

However, the new mascot has not been universally embraced. Critics from more traditional backgrounds view Luce as overly modern and a misrepresentation of the faith. Some even made unfounded associations between her name and Lucifer, although this connection was quickly dismissed.

In response to the controversy, many supporters encouraged a more lighthearted perspective, joking about the generational divide between Luce’s admirers and detractors. Proponents argue that the character represents a refreshing and approachable way for the Catholic Church to engage with younger audiences and move away from its often antiquated image.

Luce is set to make her official debut at the Lucca Comics & Games convention in Italy in early November and will also represent the Vatican at Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan, promoting the theme “Beauty Brings Hope.”
