Uzumaki Producer Addresses Animation Quality Concerns

by Hazel

After its promising premiere, Adult Swim’s adaptation of Junji Ito’s horror manga Uzumaki has faced significant criticism for its animation quality. Produced by Production IG USA in collaboration with Adult Swim, the series launched on September 28, with the second episode airing on October 5.

The first episode garnered excitement, but the follow-up prompted immediate backlash from fans who noted a noticeable decline in animation standards. Social media users expressed their dismay, recalling similar issues with past projects.

Adult Swim executive producer Jason DeMarco offered insight into the situation through a now-deleted post on Bluesky. He acknowledged the quality drop, stating, “It’s fine, we knew this would happen… we were screwed over.” DeMarco outlined three options: not airing the episodes, airing only the first, or releasing all four episodes despite the flaws. He emphasized the team’s commitment to delivering the series, even in light of production challenges, while acknowledging the right of fans to feel disappointed.

DeMarco refrained from naming specific individuals responsible for the issues but indicated that there were indeed factors contributing to the setback. He humorously referred to the production as “cursed” due to its multiple delays since the announcement in 2019.

As fans prepare for the remaining episodes, the outlook for improved animation quality appears grim, leaving many to wonder if further disappointments lie ahead. The series, based on the gripping manga, tells the story of Kirie Goshima, a girl attempting to escape the horrors of her spiral-obsessed town.
