In a recent statement, Rica Matsumoto, the voice actor for Ash Ketchum in the Japanese version of the Pokémon anime, has refuted claims of a rift between herself and the Pokémon anime staff, including Pikachu’s voice actor, Ikue Otani. These allegations surfaced following a significant data breach from Game Freak, the company behind the Pokémon video game series.
Matsumoto responded to the rumors on social media, dismissing them as unfounded. “Lol, someone is making this up,” she stated. “Don’t worry, nothing like this has happened. I’ve been friends with Iku-chan since she was a newbie, and she even came as a guest on Rika’s fan club tour. For those of you who don’t know me, I wonder if you enjoy writing something like this. No one is happy about it. I think it’s in poor taste and childish.”
The claims emerged from a massive leak involving confidential information about Game Freak, similar to a prior security breach affecting Insomniac Games in December 2023. This incident not only revealed details about upcoming Pokémon game releases for the Nintendo Switch but also sensitive internal discussions regarding the anime series, which is produced by OLM and TV Tokyo.
Among the leaked documents was a transcript suggesting that the Pokémon team had deliberated over potentially removing Ash Ketchum as the series’ main character. While the long-standing popularity of Ash presented challenges in making such a change, the discussion acknowledged the need for character development to engage new viewers while addressing frustrations from longtime fans regarding his performance.
Furthermore, the leaked transcript hinted at tensions between Matsumoto and Otani, implying that their relationship could influence casting decisions if Ash were to remain in the series. Otani continues her role as Pikachu and also voices Coral (Sango in Japan).
The leak has sparked mixed reactions among Pokémon enthusiasts, many of whom are intrigued by the insights into the franchise’s history. While some rumors have been confirmed, others, including claims that the reception of Pokémon Black and White impacted the development of Pokémon X and Y, were disproven after circulation.
