Shinichiro Watanabe, widely regarded as one of the greatest directors in anime history, is set to unveil a sneak preview of his highly anticipated new series, Lazarus, at New York Comic Con, which takes place from October 17 to 20. Renowned for his iconic works, including Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, and Space Dandy, Watanabe’s contributions have shaped the landscape of televised anime. His last project, Carol and Tuesday, premiered in 2019, leaving fans eager for his return to the medium.
For Lazarus, Watanabe is collaborating with MAPPA, the acclaimed studio behind blockbuster series such as Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man. The project’s anticipation is building, and attendees of the Comic Con panel can expect insights directly from Watanabe, along with Executive Producer Jason Demarco and producers Joseph Chou and Takenari Maeda.
The official synopsis for Lazarus sets the stage for an intriguing narrative:
In the year 2052, an era of unprecedented peace and prosperity has taken hold worldwide, thanks to a groundbreaking drug called Hapuna, developed by Nobel Prize-winning neuroscientist Dr. Skinner. This miracle cure claims to eliminate sickness and pain. However, three years later, Dr. Skinner returns with dire news: Hapuna has a short half-life, and everyone who has taken it will face death within three years. As the world grapples with this impending doom, a special task force named ‘Lazarus’ is formed, comprised of five agents from around the globe. Their mission: to stop Dr. Skinner and find a vaccine before time runs out.
Lazarus is slated to premiere on Adult Swim, with episodes available for streaming on Max the following day. Fans are encouraged to stay tuned for more updates as the release date approaches.
