AnimEigo Announces Release Date for Beloved Anime Series. AnimEigo has confirmed a new release date for the highly anticipated Blu-ray reissue of the Megazone 23 anime trilogy, now set for November 12, a change from the previously scheduled November 10. This release will include the complete trilogy, along with a variety of bonus content designed to delight longtime fans.
Among the extras featured in this Blu-ray edition are the original commentary tracks from ADV Films, as well as both the English and UK dubs for Megazone 23 Part III. The release will also include a commentary track featuring notable figures such as illustrator Gaku Miyao and producer Hiroki Sato, alongside line art galleries and liner notes written by anime author Giles Poitras.
Megazone 23 first premiered in 1985, marking a significant moment in the original video animation (OVA) market. Directed by the late Noboru Ishiguro, renowned for his work on classics such as Space Battleship Yamato and The Legend of the Galactic Heroes, the series showcased contributions from esteemed industry talents. Character designer Haruhiko Mikimoto, known for his work on Macross and Orguss, and mechanical designer Shinji Aramaki, celebrated for various mecha anime, were instrumental in the trilogy’s creation.
Following the original film, two additional sequel OVAs were released in 1986 and 1989. In August 2019, AnimEigo successfully launched a Kickstarter campaign for the Megazone 23 Omega Edition, which aimed to produce a comprehensive Blu-ray disc encompassing all three parts of the series. The campaign reached its funding goal of $100,000 just one day after its launch, demonstrating the enduring popularity of the franchise. The Omega Edition Blu-ray was shipped to backers in March 2021, marking a significant achievement for fans eager to own the complete collection.
In April 2021, AIC announced a partnership with Toei Agency to share ownership of the Megazone 23 franchise’s copyrights. Together, the two companies are working on a reboot of the series, which will include remakes of the original Megazone 23 and its sequel, as well as a new sequel titled Megazone 23 XI. AIC had previously conducted crowdfunding campaigns in 2017 to support promotional videos for these upcoming projects, both of which successfully met their funding goals.
