Nanoka Hara to Star as Lead in Film Set for Summer 2025 Release.Kadokawa announced on Thursday that Mieruko-chan, the popular horror-comedy manga created by Tomoki Izumi, will be adapted into a live-action film, set to premiere in early summer 2025. Nanoka Hara, known for her roles in Suzume and the live-action adaptation of Oshi no Ko, will take on the lead role of Miko Yotsuya.
The live-action adaptation will be directed and written by Yoshihiro Nakamura, whose previous works include Fish Story, A Boy and His Samurai, Prophecy, and Mumon: The Land of Stealth. With his strong directorial background, expectations for the film are high.
Yen Press, the English publisher of the manga, provides a synopsis of the story:
Miko Yotsuya is an ordinary high school girl with an extraordinary problem—she suddenly starts seeing grotesque, terrifying beings that no one else can. Her strategy? Ignore them entirely and hope they go away. But can she maintain her composure and live a normal life while surrounded by horrifying apparitions?
The Mieruko-chan manga launched on Kadokawa’s ComicWalker website in November 2018 and has since amassed over 85 million views. The 10th compiled volume of the manga was released by Kadokawa on February 22, and the series boasts over three million copies in circulation in Japan. In the U.S., Yen Press is set to release the 10th volume in April 2025, following the release of volume 9 earlier this year.
The series also inspired an anime adaptation in 2021, which received an English dub streamed by Funimation as it aired. The success of the anime further solidified Mieruko-chan as a beloved title, and fans are eagerly awaiting its transition to live-action.
The live-action film is poised to bring the unique blend of horror and comedy from the original manga to a new audience, with Nanoka Hara’s portrayal of Miko Yotsuya at the forefront of this much-anticipated adaptation.
