Hideaki Anno, the acclaimed Japanese animator and filmmaker best known for creating the groundbreaking Evangelion franchise, has announced a new project centered on the beloved anime series Space Battleship Yamato. The announcement was made during a special screening commemorating the 50th anniversary of the iconic science fiction series.
A Tribute to a Classic
During the anniversary event, Anno revealed that he has secured the rights to produce a new film based on Space Battleship Yamato. He expressed his deep connection to the franchise, stating, “If I had not encountered Space Battleship Yamato 50 years ago, I would not be where I am today.” Anno emphasized his commitment to honoring the legacy of Yamato, stating his intention to create works that seamlessly blend the original elements with contemporary themes. “As long as I am involved with the Yamato series, I would like to spend the rest of my life creating interesting works that weave together the old and the new as much as possible and bequeath Space Battleship Yamato to future generations, with gratitude, respect, and repayment to all the Yamato staff and cast,” he added.

Space Battleship Yamato was originally created in 1974 by Yoshinobu Nishizaki and Leiji Matsumoto. The series follows the journey of Susumu Kodai and his crew as they embark on a space mission aboard the Yamato, named after a World War II battleship. Regarded as one of the most influential anime series in Japan, Space Battleship Yamato has had a significant impact on the genre, inspiring subsequent works such as Gundam, Macross, and even the classic video game Space Invaders.
