The celebrated anime film 5 Centimeters per Second, originally released in 2007, is set to receive a live-action adaptation, marking 17 years since its debut. Directed and written by Makoto Shinkai, the original film is divided into three segments that chronicle the life of the protagonist, Takaki Tōno.
Hokuto Matsumura has been cast in the role of Takaki; he previously lent his voice to a leading character in Shinkai’s recent anime film, Suzume. The live-action film’s synopsis reveals that after becoming best friends in elementary school, Takaki and Akari face life-altering changes when their families move away. As Takaki boards a train from Tokyo to reunite with Akari after a year apart, he reflects on their shared memories, leading them to question whether they will ever meet again and to confront their unspoken feelings. The narrative promises a poignant exploration of love and lost innocence across interconnected tales.
Yoshiyuki Okuyama is set to direct the film, with a screenplay penned by Ayako Suzuki. “It feels significant that at the age of 33, I am tasked with bringing to life a story that Makoto Shinkai crafted at the same age,” Okuyama noted. “Every day, I approach 5 Centimeters per Second with the understanding that some things can only be realized now, and there are perspectives that risk fading away.”
Shinkai himself expressed his excitement on Twitter, stating, “I am truly grateful to director Okuyama, Hokuto-kun, and the rest of the young team for revitalizing this beloved work. Their enthusiasm and talent inspire me to create an anime film that meets their energy. I eagerly anticipate the new 5 Centimeters per Second on the big screen!”
Fans can look forward to the live-action adaptation, scheduled for release in fall 2025. In the meantime, viewers are encouraged to explore the best current anime and upcoming releases to enrich their watchlists.
