“The Colors Within” Debuts Strongly, Securing 7th Place in Japanese Box Office

by Hazel

In a noteworthy debut, the new drama anime film The Colors Within has made a significant impact on its opening weekend. The film, which premiered on August 30, has impressively secured the 7th position in the Japanese box office, despite facing stiff competition.

Impressive Opening Performance

The Colors Within managed to achieve this ranking within just three days of its release, from August 30 to September 1. While a 7th place finish might not be the top spot, it is remarkable for a film that has only been in theaters for a single weekend, setting it apart from its competitors.

Competitive Landscape

The film entered a competitive market, with other strong contenders including Kingdom: Return of the Great General, Despicable Me 4, My Hero Academia: You’re Next, Crayon Shin-chan The Movie: Our Dinosaurs, Inside Out 2, and Last Mile, which holds the number one position. Notably, Last Mile is the only film in the top six that has been released for less than three weeks, while the others have been in theaters for between four and eight weeks.

In addition to its box office performance, The Colors Within achieved a notable third place in Filmarks’ first-day satisfaction ranking, earning an average score of 3.92 out of 5 from over 2,000 reviews.

Critical Reception

As the film is still new, The Colors Within does not yet have a sufficient number of reviews on MyAnimeList or Rotten Tomatoes to provide an average score. However, it has garnered an average rating of 7.5 out of 10 on IMDb.

The film follows Totsuko (voiced by Sayu Suzukawa), a girl with the ability to see the colors of people’s hearts. She becomes fascinated by Kimi (voiced by Akari Takaishi), whose color is the most beautiful Totsuko has ever seen. To connect with Kimi, Totsuko forms a band with Kimi and a quiet boy named Rui (voiced by Taisei Kido). Together, they bond through their music and explore their true selves.

Behind the Scenes

The Colors Within features a cast of voice actors new to anime, with their roles marking their debut in the field. The animation is produced by Science SARU (known for Dandadan), directed by Naoko Yamada (A Silent Voice), with the screenplay written by Reiko Yoshida (Blue Period) and music composed by Kensuke Ushio (Chainsaw Man).

Global Release Plans

Similar to A Silent Voice, The Colors Within explores the trials of teenage years, though with a more nostalgic and heartfelt tone. While no exact release date for North America has been set, the film is scheduled for distribution by GKIDS in the region. International releases are also planned for Latin America, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Europe, Germany, and Italy.
