In an exciting development for fans of the Naruto franchise, creator Masashi Kishimoto has hinted at the possibility of a new spinoff centered around one of the series’ most beloved characters, Itachi Uchiha. This revelation comes almost a decade after the conclusion of the original Naruto manga, which has continued to captivate audiences through various side stories and spinoffs.
During a recent interview with Konbini, Kishimoto, alongside Mikio Ikemoto, the co-writer and illustrator of the Boruto series, discussed his future plans for the Naruto universe. When questioned about the possibility of creating additional one-shots following the 2022 release of the Minato short story, Kishimoto expressed a keen interest in exploring more character-focused narratives. Although he did not provide a definitive confirmation of future projects, he suggested that Itachi Uchiha might be the next character to receive a spotlight.
Itachi, a character renowned for his complex backstory and profound impact on the Naruto series, has long been a fan favorite. Kishimoto’s potential plans for a one-shot involving Itachi could delve into untapped aspects of his character, such as the acquisition of the legendary Totsuka Blade and Yata Mirror, or his espionage activities within the Akatsuki. The short story format might limit the scope of these explorations, but Kishimoto’s track record with previous one-shots suggests that there is ample room to enrich character relationships, much like he did with Minato and Kushina.
In addition to Itachi, Kishimoto has hinted at exploring other characters in future one-shots. Notably, Sakura Haruno, the series’ lead heroine, may be next in line. Kishimoto has previously expressed regret over Sakura’s underdeveloped character arc and the missed opportunity to explore her relationship with her parents. A dedicated one-shot could offer Sakura the development she deserves. Other characters that fans are eager to see include Sakumo Hatake, Kakashi’s father; Shisui Uchiha; and Tobirama Senju, the second Hokage.
Kishimoto’s recent comments underscore his continued passion for the Naruto universe. Following the positive reception of the Minato one-shot, it appears that Kishimoto is inspired to revisit and expand upon the rich world he created. With his renowned storytelling and artistic skill, fans have much to look forward to as Kishimoto potentially embarks on new projects within the Naruto franchise.
