The highly anticipated sequel to the acclaimed sci-fi anime series ZEGAPAIN has officially premiered. ZEGAPAIN STA, which continues the story of the original series, has opened in 22 theaters across Japan for a limited three-week run. Fans can now catch the first five minutes of the new “Olta Moda Arc” on Sunrise’s official YouTube channel.
ZEGAPAIN, which first aired from April to September 2006, was celebrated for its intricate narrative involving singularity, virtual reality, and time-loops. In 2016, the series was further expanded with ZEGAPAIN ADP, a compilation film featuring new scenes. Both the series and its film adaptation received critical acclaim for their complex storytelling.
The sequel ZEGAPAIN STA sees the return of key voice actors from the original series: Shintaro Asanuma as Kyo Sogoru, Kana Hanazawa as Ryoko Kaminagi, Ayako Kawasumi as Shizuno Misaki, and Romi Park as Mao Lu-Shen. Director Masami Shimoda returns to helm the new series, with Katsuhiko Takayama providing the screenplay.
According to the anime’s official website, the plot of ZEGAPAIN STA picks up after the events of Project Resurrection. Following their decisive victory against the Gards-orm, the Celebrants continue their fight against remaining enemy units globally.
The story begins with Kyo Sogoru, who had been defending the Maihama server, awakening in a snowy Maihama during winter. Confused by a lapse in his memory, Kyo is soon confronted by a new adversary named Olta Moda. The enigmatic Hal Welt, who calls himself “Hikaritatsumono,” attacks with a mysterious ability known as “Substance Shade.”
Assisted by the AI “Lupa,” Kyo must navigate the challenges posed by his forgotten past while preparing for a battle that pits light against technology, marking the beginning of a new struggle for survival and existence.
